This fall, Appalachian State University is offering new artificial intelligence (AI) concentrations within its master’s programs in business administration and applied data analytics. These are part of the Walker College of Business's initiative to address the rising demand for AI expertise in the business world.
The Walker College of Business Dean, Sandra Vannoy, stated, “As one of the first institutions in the Carolinas to offer AI-focused graduate business concentrations, the Walker College of Business is committed to providing transformational educational experiences to students.” She emphasized the need to align educational opportunities with industry demands and advancements in technology.
The AI concentration programs are a cross-departmental initiative designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of AI's role in business strategy, governance, and decision-making. Dr. Jason Xiong, who is the associate dean of advanced studies in business at the college, commented, “AI is reshaping industries, and business leaders with AI expertise are increasingly in demand. App State’s AI concentrations will prepare students to harness AI’s potential to drive business success while maintaining a strong ethical foundation and a global perspective.”
Adaptation to AI education is supported by data, with the McKinsey Global Institute forecasting AI could generate 20 to 50 million jobs by 2030. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) also released a report stating the importance of integrating AI into business curricula for future business leadership.
The university, which is among the top 6% of business schools worldwide accredited by AACSB, has already embedded AI-focused courses in its bachelor’s and significant participation at events like the recent Cyber Summit.
From this fall, all MBA and MSADA students will include Applied AI and Quantitative Methods in Business in their curriculum to build foundational AI knowledge. Dr. Xiong mentioned, “By integrating AI into both core and elective graduate business courses, the MBA and MSADA programs now provide students with unparalleled opportunities to explore AI’s impact across various business domains.”
Appalachian State University, recognized for its innovative teaching and accessible education, is enhancing its reputation with these AI programs offered across its Boone and Hickory campuses and through App State Online.
