Town of Seven Devils issued the following announcement on Jan. 3.
It’s the time of year when temperatures outside drop and a warm fire paired with a cup of hot cocoa is a must.
As sweet as this picture is, improperly maintained fire places and improper disposal of
coals and ashes can be a fire hazard.
Protect your family this winter by:
1. Be certain the damper or flue is open before
starting a fire.
2. Clean out ashes from previous fires.
3. Have your chimney checked annually by a
professional.
4. Check chimney for animal nests or other
blockages that could prevent smoke from
escaping.
5. Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear
of anything that is potentially flammable
6. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended.
7. Install both smoke and carbon monoxide
detectors in your home. Test both monthly and
change the batteries at least once a year.
8. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.
