Dr. Charlie Chen, a professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at Appalachian State University, has earned the 2025 University of North Carolina Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. This accolade is granted annually to one exceptional faculty member from each of the 17 institutions within the UNC System.
Appalachian State University Chancellor Heather Norris stated, “This year’s Excellence in Teaching Award winners exemplify the quality of App State’s faculty — scholars who devote their time, energy and expertise toward building academic environments, inside and outside the classroom, where students thrive.” She emphasized that the award recognizes the dedication and passion for student success.
Dr. Sandra Vannoy, the Dean of the Walker College of Business, praised Chen's contributions, saying, “Among other attributes, Dr. Chen’s enthusiasm, dedication to innovation and commitment to creating transformative experiences for our students make him a deserving honoree. I am grateful to the UNC Board of Governors for recognizing his outstanding contributions to our community.”
Dr. Chen, who has served at Appalachian State for over two decades, has developed and instructed nearly 30 courses. He has also led over 20 study abroad programs and mentored students on various projects. Chen's academic accomplishments include authoring four books and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. He holds a master's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Master of Business Administration from the American Graduate School of International Management, and a doctorate from Claremont Graduate University.
Chen has reflected on his extensive career at Appalachian State, discussing his enthusiasm for teaching, his approach to fostering innovation, and his long-standing commitment to students' success. He expressed that his motivation for teaching stems from the ability to make a difference and to encourage students to tap into their creativity.
Chen also highlighted his interest in incorporating artificial intelligence into education. "Every year, I manage around 10 different research projects," he noted, mentioning his involvement with AI kiosks at the Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship. He aims to expand the use of AI in classrooms as a tool to enhance learning.
Reflecting on his career, Chen shared his initial challenges as an educator and the transformation he underwent to become an effective teacher. He continues to be driven by the desire to explore new possibilities for his students, aiming to inspire future leaders.
