WASHINGTON, D.C. – On July 31, 2023, Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement on the conclusion of her 13th annual Teacher in Congress Internship Program – an opportunity offered to public and private school educators in North Carolina’s 5th District who teach grades nine through twelve:
“It was my pleasure to welcome Stephen Young and Samuel Tarleton – two exceptional educators in the 5th District – to Washington, D.C. for my 13th annual Teacher in Congress Internship Program. From attending committee hearings to watching floor debates, touring the U.S. Capitol to attending briefings, Stephen and Samuel had a first-hand look into Congress’ rich history and how it operates. It is my hope that this experience was as rewarding as it was insightful for them both.”
Upon concluding their program, both educators reflected upon their respective experiences:
“My time in D.C. with the Teacher in Congress program is something I will never forget. I was able to see our Capitol and government in a whole new lens. The experiences, knowledge, connections, and resources I gained from this program will forever be invaluable. I am truly thankful for this opportunity and encourage every history teacher to apply.”
-Samuel Tarleton, Forsyth County School System
“My experience in this program allowed me to witness so many first-hand accounts about our federal government that I will be able to share back with my students. I want to give a huge thanks to Dr. Foxx and her staff for such a warm welcome and for making this opportunity so worthwhile. Dr. Foxx is great with people and truly has a passion for education and teaching so I encourage any District 5 teacher to apply because it is an experience like no other and I am forever grateful for this opportunity as it will be something I will never forget.”
-Stephen Young, Surry County School System
