Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) voiced opinions following the Department of Education's decision to restart student loan payments on May 5. Walberg criticized the Biden-Harris administration for its approach to student loan policies.

He asserted, “The Biden-Harris administration’s misguided student loan policies forced hardworking American taxpayers to cover the cost of the loan repayment freeze—even if they never went to college or took out student loans.” Additionally, he stated that the 2023 congressional mandate to resume payments was overlooked, creating disarray in the repayment system.

Walberg emphasized the need to tackle high college costs and restore order within the student loan system, stating, “It is time for repayment to resume while we work to address skyrocketing, opaque college costs and restore stability in the student loan repayment system.” He expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Trump administration to reinstate borrower payments, curb spending, and instill sensible policies.
