A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Wilkes County Election Department in North Carolina regarding details of candidates running for the upcoming spring election. The request was made on February 5, 2025.
We at High Country Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, have asked for this information under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. We requested that the records be provided in an electronic format.
The specific details requested include each candidate's first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; the jurisdiction of the office; and their party affiliation. Additionally, we also requested all contact information for each candidate which includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization dedicated to transparency and holding public institutions accountable, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating information to the public.
