A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Ashe County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request was made by High Country Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The request asked for detailed information about all candidates running in the upcoming election under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. The desired format for this information is electronic.
Specifically, we at High Country Times requested the following details about each candidate: their first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; the jurisdiction of that office; and their party affiliation. Additionally, we asked for each candidate's contact information including their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization dedicated to transparency and holding public institutions accountable, we believe access to such public records is crucial in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
