Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx has commented on the Biden-Harris administration's decision to withdraw a rule concerning women's sports. The rule, according to Foxx, would have negatively impacted fairness in sports by allowing men to compete against women, which she believes contradicts the principles of Title IX.
"The Biden-Harris administration’s proposed rule to hurt women’s sports is antithetical to the cornerstone of sports—fairness," Foxx stated. She expressed relief that the rule was retracted but criticized President Biden for another Title IX rule she claims undermines protections for women. "Simply put, the attack the Biden-Harris administration unleashed on women and women’s sport is still underway," Foxx added.
Foxx referenced H.J. Res. 165, a Congressional Review Act resolution passed by the House under her leadership on July 11, 2024, aiming to nullify this Title IX rule. Furthermore, she mentioned a panel discussion led by Speaker Johnson on June 26, 2024, addressing similar concerns with participants including former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines.
In addition, House Republicans had previously passed H.R. 734 on April 20, 2023. This act amends Title IX with an aim to protect its original intent and maintain integrity in women's athletics.
