Four officers from the Appalachian State University Police Department (APD) have been honored for their exemplary service in 2024. Lt. Kevin Wilson, Sgt. Petey Hausley, Officer Tylor Greene, and Officer Cameron Masin received awards recognizing their valor and lifesaving efforts.
App State Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Johnny Brown stated, “Police officers throughout our community do selfless work every day, but when they go above and beyond the call of duty and put their lives on the line or save a life, it truly inspires everyone.” He emphasized that such outstanding work impacts not only individuals in distress but also local families and partner organizations.
Sgt. Petey Hausley was awarded an Award for Valor by the University of North Carolina System for his actions during a critical incident in 2023. The UNC System Board of Governors honors police officers annually who demonstrate bravery and exceptional service to UNC campuses' constituents. Hausley's recognition took place during a meeting on November 14, 2024, in Raleigh. This is the second consecutive year an APD officer has received this honor.
Hausley had previously received the App State Police Medal of Valor, an award given under extraordinary circumstances to recognize exceptional bravery and swift action to protect others.
Lt. Kevin Wilson, Officer Tylor Greene, and Officer Cameron Masin were each recognized with Lifesaving Awards for 2024. Greene was acknowledged for providing CPR care to a cardiac arrest victim, saving their life. Reflecting on this experience, Greene said, “What a blessing it was to meet such a good person and see them interact with family.”
Wilson and Masin saved another individual's life while responding to a mental health crisis situation in 2024. They ensured the individual's safety during the incident and provided continued support afterward. Officer Masin expressed his motivation for joining law enforcement: “Being able to save someone’s life is the reason I got into law enforcement.”
Chief Brown thanked the Board of Governors, UNC System, and Chancellor Heather Norris for acknowledging the officers' exceptional actions: “It means a lot to our officers and their families when we celebrate their service to others.”
The App State Police Department aims to support Appalachian State University's academic mission through proactive community engagement focused on crime prevention and problem-solving while ensuring campus safety.
