Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) has expressed strong criticism of AmeriCorps following the agency's failure to pass its financial audit for the eighth consecutive year.
Foxx stated, "The results of the Inspector General’s audit have further cemented the fact that AmeriCorps is nothing more than a burn pit for the dollars of hardworking taxpayers. Those in charge are either too dense to realize that the whole agency has gone up in smoke, or they are simply too obstinate to even care."
She proposed a drastic measure to address what she sees as a persistent problem, suggesting, "Here’s a simple solution that will cure this fiscal contagion: close AmeriCorps’ doors and tear the agency down brick by brick."
