Appalachian State University will conduct a test of its Boone campus siren warning system on March 5 at 11:55 a.m. The university's emergency preparedness webpage offers examples of the tones used during emergencies and tests.
The siren system employs different tones for various situations: a hi/low tone for emergencies, a discontinuous air horn for system tests, and an alert tone for the all-clear signal. "The siren will be activated only when immediate, ongoing and/or significant threats to campus are in progress, such as an active shooter on or near campus, or a tornado warning for the area," according to university officials.
Appalachian State's AppState-ALERT system provides voice, text, and email notifications for both the Boone and Hickory campuses. Students and employees are encouraged to register for these alerts through their AppalNET accounts.
Regular siren tests occur on the first Wednesday of each month at the Boone campus. For further details about the AppState-ALERT system, individuals can visit the university’s Emergency Preparedness website.
