Appalachian State University’s New River Light and Power (NRLP) has joined forces with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI) to launch a scholarship for aspiring lineworkers. This initiative targets graduating seniors from Watauga High School and Watauga Innovation Academy, providing financial support for those pursuing careers in the electric utility sector.

The NRLP Lineworker Scholarship is designed to address the increasing demand for skilled lineworkers by offering financial aid to cover tuition, tools, and other expenses associated with CCC&TI’s Electrical Lineworker Institute. The program runs several times a year.

“This scholarship is an investment in our community and future workforce,” stated Hank Foreman, vice chancellor of external affairs and strategic initiatives at App State. “Our partnership with CCC&TI provides local students with a direct pathway into a vital industry, helping to build a stronger and more resilient regional economy.”

The field of linework is experiencing high demand due to retirements outpacing new entrants and an anticipated 8% growth rate from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau estimates about 10,700 annual openings for lineworkers over the next decade. These professionals play a crucial role in maintaining infrastructure and ensuring community connectivity, especially during crises like recent hurricanes in the High Country.

“We’re excited to partner with New River Light and Power on this scholarship initiative for our Electrical Lineworker program,” said Dr. Mark Poarch, president of CCC&TI. “Now more than ever, our community understands the importance of having a highly skilled workforce to keep the lights on and to keep our communities safe during difficult situations. Offering this scholarship will allow more students interested in a utilities career to enroll in the program and will help CCC&TI continue to educate and prepare talented students for work in the field."

Applicants must graduate from Watauga High School or Watauga Innovation Academy and enroll in CCC&TI’s Electrical Lineworker Institute. Scholarships are awarded based on need and interest in linework. Applications are due by April 10, with recipients notified by May 22.
