Today, Congressman Tim Walberg from Michigan, who chairs the Education and Workforce Committee, responded to the recent announcement by Katrina Armstrong, the interim president of Columbia University, about her decision to step down. Walberg emphasized concerns regarding antisemitism at the institution, urging Columbia to take concerted steps to address the issue.
Walberg stated, "Now is not the time for Columbia University to regress as it works to combat the rampant antisemitism plaguing the school. So far Columbia has largely failed to uphold its commitment to Jewish students and faculty – leaving them to face harassment, intimidation, and even assault." He praised the Trump administration for its efforts to tackle antisemitism, asserting a continued partnership with the administration in these efforts. "This Committee is working diligently alongside it to continue the momentum we’ve created in addressing antisemitism," Walberg added. He expressed a hopeful yet cautious approach towards the leadership transition, saying, "But the school and its administrators must put in the work to combat this evil. Ms. Shipman, while we wish you all good success, we will be watching closely."
The statement follows Walberg's recent action on February 13, when he sent a letter to Columbia University administrators. The letter asked for details concerning disciplinary actions for several antisemitic events, notably the January 21 disturbance in a History of Israel class where inflammatory flyers were distributed.
