Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, celebrated the achievements of its graduates during the Fall 2024 Commencement ceremonies on December 13. The event marked the end of an academic journey for over 1,500 students who faced challenges such as a global pandemic and a natural disaster.

The ceremonies saw participation from 1,373 undergraduate students from seven colleges and schools, along with 191 graduate students and nine doctoral candidates from the Williams School of Graduate Studies. Interim Chancellor Heather Norris presided over the events, while Acting Provost Neva J. Specht presented the candidates for graduation.

C. Philip Byers, a member of the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors and an App State alumnus, shared remarks alongside Mark E. Ricks, chair of App State’s Board of Trustees. “Class of 2024, this ceremony is not just a celebration of your academic success but also of the resilience and perseverance you’ve shown in the face of unprecedented challenges,” Norris addressed the students.

Byers encouraged graduates to remember their education at Appalachian State University as they move forward: “Your education at Appalachian State University has provided you with the expertise and skills to achieve the goals and dreams you set forth.”

Ricks spoke about community ties: “Today, you don’t just graduate; you join a family — a community that will always welcome you back.”

During one ceremony featuring graduates from various colleges within the university, John M. Blackburn was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for his long-standing support to Appalachian State University and surrounding communities. Norris highlighted Blackburn's dedication: “John’s dedication to improving quality of life and educational systems are extraordinary.”

Blackburn has been recognized for his service in North Carolina through numerous contributions that have enhanced medical care, recreation, education, and overall quality of life in rural areas like Avery and Watauga counties.

Appalachian State University continues its mission as part of the University of North Carolina System by preparing students to lead purposeful lives with more than 21,000 enrolled students across its campuses.
