Appalachian State University will conduct a test of its Boone campus siren warning system on Wednesday, December 4, at 11:55 a.m. The university has made examples of the tones used during emergencies or tests available online on the Siren Warning System webpage found on App State’s Emergency Preparedness website.

The siren system employs different tones for various situations: a hi/low tone for emergencies, a discontinuous air horn for tests, and an alert tone for the all-clear signal. The siren is activated only in cases of immediate, ongoing, or significant threats to campus safety, such as an active shooter or a tornado warning.

Additionally, the AppState-ALERT notification system provides voice, text, and email alerts for both the Boone and Hickory campuses. Students and employees are encouraged to register for these alerts through their AppalNET accounts.

Campus siren tests in Boone typically occur on the first Wednesday of each month. More information about the AppState-ALERT system can be found on App State’s Emergency Preparedness website.

Appalachian State University is part of the University of North Carolina System and is known for its innovative teaching methods and commitment to providing high-quality education. The university serves over 21,000 students across its Boone and Hickory campuses and offers numerous undergraduate and graduate programs.
