The Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development will hold a hearing tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. titled: “FAFSA Fail: Examining the Impact on Students, Families, and Schools.” Chairman Burgess Owens (R-UT) expressed concerns about the Education Department's FAFSA rollout, stating, “The Education Department’s FAFSA rollout has been defined by poor communication, negligence, and incompetence that has wreaked havoc on the entire university system." He highlighted how FAFSA delays have negatively affected millions of students, leaving them uncertain about their academic futures.
Ranking Member Frederica Wilson (D-FL) emphasized the importance of a smooth FAFSA process, stating, “As students are patiently working through the college application process, it is concerning that many continue to experience delays in the FAFSA process." Wilson underscored the need for administrators to ensure seamless execution of the education architecture to prevent obstacles for students accessing education.
The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2024, will feature witnesses including Mr. Mark Kantrowitz, President of Cerebly, Inc.; Mr. Justin Draeger, President & CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators; Ms. Kim Cook, CEO of the National College Attainment Network; and Ms. Rachelle Feldman, Vice Provost, Enrollment, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
The hearing will be open to the press and live-streamed on the Committee’s YouTube page.
