Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) has criticized the Department of Labor’s (DOL) final Walkaround Rule, which would allow unions and activists who are not employees of the employer access to worksites during Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections.
"This rule has absolutely nothing to do with keeping workers safe. Rather it weaponizes OSHA inspections—harming workers’ safety while also increasing employers’ costs. This isn’t surprising given this administration’s zeal for regulatory overreach," Foxx stated.
She further expressed concern that the rule prioritizes unionizing efforts and activist campaigns over safety measures, undermining OSHA's mission of protecting workers' health and safety. Foxx remarked, "It appears the Biden administration’s only concern is propping up Big Labor’s agenda. Mr. President, workers and job creators hear your message loud and clear."
Foxx has been vocal about her opposition to the Walkaround Rule since August 29, 2023, when she released a statement in response to OSHA's proposed rule. She continued her efforts by submitting a comment letter to Acting Secretary Su urging the Department to withdraw the rule on November 13, 2023, and raising concerns over the lack of sound data to justify the rule in a letter to Acting Secretary Su on February 12, 2024.
The Chairwoman's consistent efforts reflect her commitment to ensuring that the DOL's regulations prioritize the safety and well-being of workers, without undue influence from external parties.
