County of Wilkes issued the following announcement on July 28.
The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 6:00 p.m., at the Wilkes County Office Building for the purpose of hearing public comments on a proposed Road Naming and Addressing Ordinance
Please take notice that the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners (hereinafter “the Board of Commissioners”) will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 6:00 p.m., with the regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners to immediately follow, in the Commissioners’ Room at the Wilkes County Office Building, 110 North Street, Wilkesboro, North Carolina, for the purpose of hearing public comments on a proposed Road Naming and Addressing Ordinance (hereinafter “Ordinance”) for Wilkes County, North Carolina. The proposed Ordinance constitutes a comprehensive overhaul of the current Wilkes County Road Naming Ordinance, which has been in effect since 1985, and has been reviewed and forwarded by the Wilkes County Joint Planning Board to the Board of Commissioners with a recommendation that it be approved.
Under the proposed Ordinance, regulations would be enacted with respect to the following matters:
A. The Ordinance contains both procedural and substantive provisions concerning the naming of private roads in Wilkes County.
B. The Ordinance contains both procedural and substantive provisions concerning the assigning of addresses for addressable locations in Wilkes County.
C. The Ordinance defines “addressable locations” eligible for the assigning of an address. “Addressable locations” include a dwelling, a commercial occupancy as defined under the North Carolina Building Code, an agricultural operation for which the owner thereof has a North Carolina Department of Revenue state farm tax exemption number or which is located on property that has duly qualified for present use value as determined by the Wilkes County Tax Assessor’s Office, a communication tower facility which has been duly approved pursuant to the Wilkes County Wireless Communication Tower Ordinance, and a private structure such as a storage building, garage, barn, or other similar structure that has been approved by the Wilkes County Inspections Department pursuant to the North Carolina Building Code.
D. A recreational vehicle (camper) would not qualify as a dwelling unless it is located within a recreational vehicle park duly approved under the Wilkes County Mobile Home Park Ordinance or unless it has been issued an operation permit for an approved and installed wastewater system by the Wilkes County Health Department.
All comments received at the public hearing will be considered by the Board of Commissioners prior to its approval of a proposed Ordinance, and changes in the same may be made as a result of objection, debate, and discussion at or following the public hearing. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.
