Town Of North Wilkesboro issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.
Up to 20 varieties of tomatoes grown by Wilkes County vegetable farmers and Master Gardener volunteers will be featured, said Elina Snyder, horticultural agent with the Wilkes Cooperative Extension Service.
There will be entries from Owens Farm, Tumbling Shoals Farm, Jeremiah Church, Juicy Fruit Produce and other farms. Snyder said farms with the winning tomato varieties will receive prizes. Tomato tasters will be entered to win door prizes. “This is a family friendly event and great opportunity to learn about and sample different types of tomatoes,” she added. “There will be a mix of heirloom and newer varieties and tomatoes of different shapes, sizes and colors. Those who participate in the tasting will be able to try as many of the varieties as they would like and vote on their favorite variety.” The N.C. Cooperative Extension table will have information on growing and preserving tomatoes and healthful recipes that feature tomatoes. The Wilkes County Farmers Market, at 842 CBD Loop, features vendors selling a variety of produce, eggs, plants and crafts.
