COUNTY OF MITCHELL: Applications Being Taken For CDBG Neighborhood Revitalization Program Grants

County of Mitchell issued the following announcement on Aug. 112. 

Mitchell County is in the process of applying for a $750,000 grant to implement a Scattered Site Housing Rehabilitation Program. Each county in North Carolina, with the exception of Wake, Cumberland, Mecklenburg and Union is eligible to receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from the North Carolina Division of Community Assistance to develop a Scattered Site Housing Program.  The program provides funding for housing repairs to low-income homeowners.  Homes selected for the program must be brought up to current building codes, and could possibly be eligible for replacement with a new mobile home.

Homeowners must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the CDBG Scattered Site Housing Program

  • The Property must be located in Mitchell County,
  • The Property cannot be located in the floodplain.
  • The applicant must own and occupy the property full time (a legally prepared and recorded “Life
Estate” or life time rights to the property spelled out in an existing deed may also be accepted)

  • Total gross income (before taxes) for everyone in the household over the age of 18 must be below

    80% of the median income for Mitchell County (please see the chart below).

Applications for assistance will be accepted through September 10, 2021.   Applications will be available at the Mitchell County Finance Office, the Mitchell County Department of Social Services, the Mitchell County Senior Center, Mitchell County Tax Office, Mitchell County Department of Inspections, Town of Bakersville and Town of Spruce Pine. To insure your application will receive consideration, it must be submitted no later than Friday, September 10, 2021.
