Appalachian State University has been chosen as one of the new headquarter locations for NCInnovation's applied research support, according to an announcement by the UNC System on October 31. Alongside Appalachian State, Fayetteville State University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington will join existing hubs at East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Western Carolina University.

NCInnovation is a nonprofit organization focused on leveraging the research capabilities of North Carolina’s public universities. It provides grant funding and other forms of support to researchers working on projects with practical applications and commercial potential. The organization had previously announced its first set of research grants in May, which included projects from seven universities such as Appalachian State.

UNC System President Peter Hans emphasized the importance of research within the system's mission: “Research is a pillar of the UNC System’s mission and a critical part of our service to North Carolinians.” He highlighted that NCInnovation has already supported significant projects including cancer treatments, vaccines, and clean drinking water solutions.

Dr. Rahman Tashakkori from Appalachian State was awarded a $641,951 grant earlier this year for his work on the Beemon Hive Monitoring System. His research aims to reduce honeybee die-off and enhance hive production.

Appalachian State Interim Chancellor Heather Norris expressed commitment to advancing applied research: “Our collaboration with NCInnovation not only enhances opportunities for our faculty, staff and students but also supports the vital mission of translating university research into solutions that benefit the people and economies of our state and region.”

Regional directors at these hubs will assist researchers by connecting them with industry partners to move their projects towards commercialization. With additional staff being hired due to this expansion, NCInnovation aims to provide more comprehensive support across campuses.

Bennet Waters, CEO of NCInnovation stated: “The university-to-industry pipeline is central to innovation here in North Carolina.” Michelle Bolas, Chief Innovation Officer at NCInnovation added: “We’ve been excited at the enthusiasm...and believe that expanding our footprint...will allow NCInnovation to offer even more support.”

The next round of grants from NCInnovation will be available soon for all applied researchers within the UNC System.
