Military Times has recognized Appalachian State University as one of the top institutions for military service members and veterans in its 2024 "Best for Vets: Colleges" rankings. The university achieved a rank of No. 39 out of 304 schools nationwide, placing it within the top 13% of recognized institutions. In the Southeast, App State is among the top 10 ranked schools and holds the No. 2 position in North Carolina.
In addition to these accolades, App State was listed as No. 29 among the 215 public schools included in the rankings, positioning it within the top 14% of public institutions acknowledged by Military Times.
“These recognitions reaffirm our steadfast dedication across the university to support veterans, service members and their families in their academic pursuits,” said App State Interim Chancellor Heather Norris. “We are grateful for the chance to serve those who have served our country and we are honored to continue supporting you.”
The rankings assess U.S. higher education institutions based on student success metrics, programs, training, and support infrastructure for military-affiliated students. They aim to "help veterans make important decisions about their educational planning and how to use the education benefits they earned through military service," according to Military Times.
Military Times' online profile of App State highlights resources available for military-affiliated students, such as career services tailored specifically for them, priority registration for classes, and various support centers including the Major General Edward M. Reeder Jr. Student Veteran Resource Center. Additionally, designated admissions counselors assist veterans and military service members with financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
In fall 2024, App State's enrollment includes 1,403 military-affiliated students comprising 261 veterans, 113 active-duty service members, 40 military spouses, and 989 military dependents.
“Our student veterans bring invaluable experience, perspective and resilience to the App State Community," said Bethany Gonzalez, associate director of App State Student Veteran Services. "They take on leadership roles across campus and are deeply committed to service within and beyond our university."
Gonzalez further noted that many military-affiliated students volunteered in community efforts following Hurricane Helene.
Appalachian State University is part of the University of North Carolina System with over 21,000 enrolled students across its Boone and Hickory campuses as well as online programs.
