Nearly three weeks after Hurricane Helene impacted Boone, Appalachian State University students returned to campus with a commitment to aid in recovery efforts. On October 19, the university's Office of Community-Engaged Leadership organized the Student Day of Service - Together We Are Mountain Strong event. Approximately 175 students participated, contributing over 500 hours of service across 15 locations in the High Country.
The volunteer work supported hurricane relief and recovery in local communities. Students engaged in activities such as river and trail cleanups and sorting supplies at distribution centers. Rebekah Payne, a junior majoring in ecology, evolution, and environmental biology from Jacksonville, worked with Blue Ridge Conservancy on hiking trails cleanup in West Jefferson. "Volunteering means being a part of something bigger than yourself," said Payne.
Sarina Prather, a first-year student majoring in communication sciences and disorders from Wake Forest, volunteered at Blowing Rock Conference Center to clear debris. "I wanted to physically help the community," Prather stated.
Dr. Brent James, assistant director of community engagement at App State, emphasized the importance of students understanding community needs through direct involvement. "To learn firsthand about the needs of the community... can be such a positive experience," he noted.
Appalachian State University regularly hosts Day of Service events for students each academic year. The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership provides programs that enhance students' capacity to serve responsibly within their communities.
