The Biden-Harris Department of Education (ED) has issued new guidance urging schools to avoid "misrepresentation" in describing their educational programs. This includes being truthful about rankings, salary data, job placement rates, and the cost of attendance.
However, the Committee has criticized the ED for its own alleged lack of transparency. They cite several instances where they believe ED has misrepresented facts to the public. These include inaccurate claims about FAFSA completion times, unanswered calls at their call center, misleading students about postsecondary education opportunities, and providing incorrect net price information due to erroneous aid eligibility data.
The Committee expressed concerns over the upcoming December 1st release date for the 2025-26 FAFSA. With previous delays already impacting students and families, they stress that any further issues could exacerbate concerns about college affordability.
The Committee suggests that ED should halt new regulatory actions until the FAFSA is fully operational as a gesture of goodwill and to prioritize essential departmental functions.
"What's it going to be, ED? More rules, more regulations, and more student loan scams? Or a renewed commitment to the core functions of the Department? Only time will tell," concludes their statement.
