Jefferson's Historic Ashe Hospital was recognized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, HUD officials said in an October release.
HUD and the ACHP awarded Historic Ashe Hospital with this year's Secretary's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation, the release said.
"This historic hospital holds a special place in the hearts of the Jefferson, [North Carolina] community," HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in the release, "and it will continue to serve its residents for years to come."
The two organizations salute various groups and agencies each year for their historic preservation status as they offer individuals and families affordable housing or the chance to grow economically, the release said.
Historic Ashe Hospital, which houses low-income senior citizens and those with disabilities, first opened its doors in the 1940s before reopening last year. It has 46 apartments featuring studios, one to two bedrooms.
"Historic Ashe Hospital is a prime example of the innovation that comes from public-private partnerships, not only preserving a historic structure but reutilizing it to create more affordable housing for seniors," Carson said in the release.
