North Carolina's Senate budget writers proposed a bill that will help protect law enforcement and teachers by creating reserve accounts that will fund salaries, Senate Leader Phil Berger posted to his Medium page.
Sens. Harry Brown (R-Onslow), Kathy Harrington (R-Gaston) and Brent Jackson (R-Sampson) introduced the Law Enforcement and Teacher Protection Act after those workers had salaries cut in the last recession, according to the May 19 post.
"These reserves will provide a mechanism to avoid repeating what the Democrats did during the last recession," according to the statement.
While the bill doesn't provide funding amounts, the senators wanted to let it be known that this session's financial priority lies with teachers and law enforcement salaries, according to the post.
"The bills do not yet have funding figures attached to them," according to the statement. "That step will be taken once the legislature’s economist releases more estimates on the state’s revenue outlook, which will almost certainly be several billion dollars below projections from just a few months ago."
