Wilkes County clarifies responsibility for road maintenance after severe weather

Wilkes County officials have clarified that the responsibility for clearing roads and maintaining roadways after severe weather does not fall under the Wilkes County Offices or the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners. Instead, these duties are managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Streets within city limits are maintained by either the Town of Wilkesboro or the Town of North Wilkesboro.

The county is directing residents to NCDOT resources for information on how snow-clearing priorities are set during winter weather. The department’s snow-clearing policy can be found at https://www.ncdot.gov/travel-maps/traffic-travel/severe-weather/Pages/snow-clearing-policy.aspx.

A statement from county officials reads: “Wilkes County Offices and the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners are not responsible for clearing roads or road maintenance following inclement weather.”
