Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, North Carolina, is set to host its annual Camp Med Summer Program from June 16-20, 2025. The program targets students in grades 9-12 and aims to provide them with insights into the healthcare field. Participants will explore various aspects of medicine and potential career paths within the industry.

Throughout the weeklong camp, students will engage in activities such as CPR training, aquatic therapy, job shadowing experiences, and basic skills workshops. This year’s program includes a visit to the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education for immersive hands-on training through simulation labs and collaborative learning. Students will also interact with community partners like Ashe Medics and Highlands Emergency Air & Rescue Transport to learn about their careers and services.

Angel Gouge, education manager for Ashe Memorial Hospital, stated: "Camp Med is a wonderful opportunity for local students to begin to explore if a career in the medical field might be right for them." She emphasized that participants gain understanding through direct observation, hands-on training, group discussions, and presentations by key speakers.

The program is organized by the Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC), affiliated with Wake Forest School of Medicine as part of the NC AHEC System. It offers high school students interested in health sciences a chance to engage with healthcare professionals.
