Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee Chairman Burgess Owens (R-UT) led a hearing focused on the policies and priorities of AmeriCorps, particularly its failure in the FY 2024 audit. In his prepared statement, Owens emphasized the responsibility of ensuring taxpayer money is used effectively.

Owens highlighted AmeriCorps' history with audits, noting that it has failed eight consecutive ones. He referenced a 2023 report by the AmeriCorps Inspector General detailing significant challenges, including an inability to detect fraud. "We have no real idea when AmeriCorps will be able to have a clean audit again," he said.

Despite these issues, Owens criticized Democrats for wanting to expand AmeriCorps' budget by $80 million. He expressed concern over the Biden-Harris administration's use of AmeriCorps funds for climate initiatives like the American Climate Corps. "It makes no sense to expand this agency or give it more money when it continuously fails to meet basic accountability standards," Owens stated.

Owens called for a complete overhaul or elimination of what he described as a flawed program. While acknowledging that some programs are well-intentioned, he argued they do not justify continued financial support given the lack of results.

In closing remarks, Owens praised Chairwoman Dr. Foxx for her contributions to the Committee and highlighted her focus on national security issues related to education and workforce development.
