Town of Beech Mountain issued the following announcement on Aug. 5.
Paved roads across the High Country are getting a refresh. Please be particularly alert and expect delays, as the Avery County DOT works on Highways 184 and 194 in the Banner Elk/Sugar Mountain/Matney/Heaton areas. Paving has reached the traffic light in Banner Elk at this time. Daniel Davis of the Beech Mountain Public Works Department has estimated the timeline below, based upon information from the DOT (weather-dependent, of course):
August 1-8: Paving to the north from the traffic light in Banner Elk on 194, toward Valle Crucis to the Watauga County line (possible night work)
August 8-18: Paving to the south from the traffic light in Banner Elk on 194, toward the Elk River Club/Elk Park (possible night work)
August 18: Paving begins from the base of the Beech Mountain Parkway in Banner Elk on 184 North. Paving will take place from the bottom to the top, and daytime only, due to safety concerns
September 1: Paving reaches the Elderberry Ridge Road intersection, and the BMP will be milled down (top layers removed and replaced) prior to paving toward the Beech Mountain Resort
September 18: Paving completed to the resort, and DOT ditch line work begins
September 25: Estimated completion date for all paving and ditch work on the Beech Mountain Parkway
This is an unofficial schedule, but we can all look forward to a smooth ride in and around the Town of Beech Mountain this fall and winter! Many thanks to Daniel Davis for his continuing collaboration with NCDOT to get this important work completed for us.
