Wilkes County high school seniors will not have to face the same requirements their peers did last year as a result of COVID-19's far-reaching impacts.
Donna Cotton, the chief academic officer for the district, confirmed the academic changes, the Wilkes Journal-Patriot reported on April 8.
During a March 27 meeting, Cotton said seniors are switching to a pass/fail system, the publication reported. Any class that the students were passing before closures will have a pass-grade. If a student was not passing the class, then it is the teacher’s responsibility to provide learning opportunities for them to improve their grades.
“It really important that we pay attention to our seniors right now if they have a graduation credit they need to work on,” Cotton said, the Wilkes Journal-Patriot reported.
If a senior was not passing the class, then they receive a withdrawal, the publication reported. For year-long classes, the GPA is calculated with the fall grade.
