A state representative praised North Carolina-based poultry producers for their work to keep the food-supply chain operational during COVID-19.
"Thank you to the poultry producers and process workers especially now during COVID-19," Rep. Jeffrey Elmore (R-Wilkes) said in a Facebook post recently. "Their hard work is keeping food on our tables."
North Carolina ranks 2nd nationwide in poultry production, according to The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Elmore said 60% of U.S. poultry is produced on small family farms.
While thanking farmers and meat producers, the Republican has had to adjust to changes in his professional life outside of the statehouse. Elmore has taught in the Wilkes County Schools for 19 years and has had to adapt to virtual instruction just like his peers across the country.
"As I work on my own digital lessons and distance learning packets for my art students, I see lots of hard work at my schools," Elmore said. "Uncharted territory. Our communities will get through this, hopefully soon."
