FOIA Request to Wilkes County regarding expense reimbursements on February 1, 2026.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by High Country Times to Wilkes County, North Carolina, seeking access to the county’s expense reimbursement records for the immediately preceding calendar month. The request was made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., and aims to obtain information that is of public interest.

The specific details requested include the name and title of individuals reimbursed, dates and amounts of reimbursements, descriptions of the expenses reimbursed, and the associated department or office. The request emphasizes that it seeks existing records only and does not require the creation of new documents. Furthermore, if any part of this request is denied or withheld, a statutory basis for such denial is requested along with all reasonably segregable portions of the records.

High Country Times has expressed a preference for receiving these records in electronic format if available. As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, they argue that access to these public records is essential for fulfilling their professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency.

Additionally, High Country Times has requested a fee waiver based on their role as a media professional involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. The requester is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization assisting media companies in investigating governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.

Of note in Wilkes County school districts, 19% of senior students taking the science portion of the ACT were considered ready for college during the 2022-23 school year.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
